Permanent residents are granted many rights and privileges, such as the right to receive most social benefits, and the right to live, work and study anywhere in Canada. However, permanent residents cannot vote, run for political office or hold certain jobs that require a high security level.
There are many Canadian Immigration Programs and the requirements are different based on each of the Immigration programs.

Express Entry Program:
The Express Entry system is a two steps process to manage permanent residence applications of candidates who qualify under these federal economic immigration programs. The province of Quebec is not part of the Express Entry:
Federal Skilled Worker Program:
The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade. Skilled Trades currently eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are under these major and minor groups
Federal Skilled Worker Express Entry :
Skilled workers are people who are chosen as permanent residents based on their ability to prosper in Canada. A Federal skilled worker (FSW) application is based on the factors set out below before the Express Entry process.
Business Immigration: This is for business people entering Canada as an investor or entrepreneur.
Sponsoring Your Family:
The intent of the family class immigration program is to reunite Canadian citizens and permanent residents with close members of the family class. By undertaking to support sponsored members of the family class, the sponsor promises that their family member will not be a burden on Canadian society for the duration of the undertaking.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC) :
The CEC is a program to help people who have been working in Canada.
If a temporary foreign worker or a foreign student has skilled work experience in Canada, they are in a good position to move from temporary to permanent residence under the (CEC).
Humanitarian and Compassionate Applications:
This application is for people living in Canada without legal status but who have nevertheless established themselves and made Canada their home.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP):
Designed to enable provinces to support the immigration of persons who demonstrate an interest in settling in that province and who the province believes will be able to contribute to the economic development and prosperity of the province and Canada. Foreign nationals who immigrate to Canada under the PNP have the skills, education and work experience required to make an immediate economic contribution to the province or territory that nominates them.

- Education: You need to provide your foreign Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report which is the Canadian equivalent of the education credentials you have obtained outside Canada.
- Language Proficiency: You must provide a proof of your language proficiency in English, French or both. You are expected to achieve a minimum of the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7.
- Experience: Relevant work experience of a skilled nature, satisfying either Skill Type 0 or Skill Level A or B in Canada’s National Occupation Classification (NOC) system
- Health Records and Criminal History: You will have to prove that you will not be a threat to the Canadian Security nor a burden on the Canadian Health System.
To apply for PR you have to :
- be a permanent resident of Canada;
- be physically present in Canada;
- meet the residency requirement (see Appendix A – Residency obligation);
- not be under an effective removal order;
- not be a Canadian citizen; and
- not be convicted of an offense related to the misuse of a PR Card
- Permanent Residents outside of Canada
- If you are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR Card to return, you must get a Permanent Resident Travel Document from a Visa Application Centre or a Canadian visa office.
