Even though there are no employment requirements or minimum income requirements for sponsoring a spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, as a sponsor, you must demonstrate that you can provide financial support for your partner for three years from the time they become a permanent resident. This obligation remains even in the case of a divorce.

- Spousal Sponsorship :
To qualify, your marriage must be legitimate and legally recognized by the country where the marriage occurred and under the Canadian law. You must meet the requirements of the marriage throughout the whole period until you enter Canada.
You will be required to provide supporting evidence and proof that the relationship is genuine and that the marriage was not entered for immigration purpose.
If your spouse is already in Canada, your spouse can remain in Canada until you receive a decision on the application. - Common law sponsorship
A common law relationship is an exclusive, committed relationship similar to marriage. You must have cohabitated continuously for at least one year prior to submitting the application. You do not have to be living together at the time of submitting the application, however, it is recommended to apply as soon as possible. Otherwise, it may give the impression that the relationship has ended. - Conjugal Relationship
Similar to common law relationship but without the one-year continuous living together. The conjugal relationship requires a significant degree of attachment and interdependence. - Same-sex relationships :
They are treated the same way as opposite sex common law relationships. The couple have to show that the relationship is exclusive and a life-long commitment for at least one year cohabitation period.
