Undertaking

Undertaking

You will have to sign an undertaking agreement with the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration promising to support the sponsored person with basic needs from the day they enter Canada until the end of the undertaking period. You also accept the obligation to repay the government any social assistance payments made to the sponsored person during this period. You will remain obligated under all circumstances till the end of the undertaking period.

As a sponsor, you are also required to sign a sponsorship agreement with the sponsored person confirming their understanding of their mutual responsibilities and obligations to make all the efforts possible to provide for their basic needs of their family members.


How long is the undertaking period?
  • The duration of undertaking varies depending on who you are sponsoring.
    • Spouse, Common law partner or conjugal partner : 3 years from the date of becoming a Permanent Resident
    • Dependent children
      •  under 13 years : 10 years
      • 13-21 when they become a PR : 10 years or on the day the child becomes 25, whichever comes first
      • 22 + when they become PR: 3 years
    • Parents/Grandparents and accompanying dependents : 20 years
    • Any other relatives : 10 years
